RACE Fire Safety Mnemonic

RACE is the essential fire safety mnemonic that every nurse must know for both clinical practice and the NCLEX. It outlines the four actions to take in order when a fire is discovered in a healthcare facility. Fire safety is a high-priority topic in the Safe and Effective Care Environment section of the NCLEX test plan.

Breakdown

R

Rescue

Immediately rescue any patients, visitors, or staff in immediate danger from the fire. Move them to safety behind the next fire door or to the nearest safe area. Rescue is always the first priority because human life takes precedence.

A

Alarm

Activate the fire alarm by pulling the nearest pull station. Call the facility's emergency number (often an overhead code). Notify the switchboard and charge nurse. Do not assume someone else has already activated the alarm.

C

Contain

Contain the fire by closing all doors and windows in the area. Close the door to the room where the fire originated. This limits oxygen supply to the fire and prevents smoke spread. Turn off oxygen and electrical equipment in the immediate area.

E

Extinguish

Extinguish the fire using the appropriate fire extinguisher only if the fire is small and you have been trained. If the fire cannot be controlled, evacuate the area immediately. Never put yourself at risk to fight a fire.

Clinical Relevance

NCLEX questions on fire safety test whether you know to rescue patients first before activating the alarm. The most common incorrect answer is pulling the alarm first. Always remember: get people out of danger, then alert others, contain the spread, and only then attempt to extinguish if it is safe to do so. Also know that oxygen supports combustion and must be turned off during a fire.

Study Tips

  • โœ“The most common NCLEX trap is choosing to pull the alarm before rescuing the patient. Always rescue first.
  • โœ“Remember to shut off oxygen in the area because oxygen is an accelerant that feeds fire.
  • โœ“Horizontal evacuation (moving to another unit on the same floor) is preferred over vertical evacuation in hospitals.
  • โœ“Pair RACE with PASS (the fire extinguisher mnemonic) for complete fire safety knowledge.

Common questions about this mnemonic

The NCLEX prioritizes patient safety above all else. A patient in the immediate vicinity of a fire is in life-threatening danger. Pulling the alarm takes only seconds but those seconds could mean the difference between a patient escaping a fire or being trapped. Once the patient is safe, activating the alarm alerts the rest of the facility.

Oxygen supports and accelerates combustion. The nurse should shut off all oxygen equipment in the affected area as part of the Contain step. This includes wall oxygen, portable tanks, and any oxygen-delivery devices. However, never disconnect a patient from life-sustaining oxygen without ensuring they can be safely moved to another oxygen source.
